Baby formula recalled after infant botulism linked to infant formula

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Whatcom County Health and Community Services issued the following statement today, November 13, 2025.

ByHeart has issued a voluntary recall for all batches of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula products.  This includes all lots of formula cans and single-serve “anywhere” sticks.

On November 8, 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced an outbreak of infant botulism linked to infant formula. Since August 2025, at least 15 cases have been identified in 12 states, including one case in an infant who resided in Washington at the time of exposure. Although infant botulism is potentially fatal, no deaths have been reported at this time; several cases remain hospitalized.

You can get botulism from eating contaminated food or when a wound is contaminated by the bacteria. The disease is not spread from person to person. Infants are especially at risk because the bacteria can infect their intestines and produce the harmful toxin. The amount of exposure to the toxin determines how quickly symptoms appear, ranging from a few hours to several days or weeks. Parents should remain vigilant if their infant has consumed any powdered formula from ByHeart.

What You Should Do

  • Do not use recalled infant formula. Consumers who have purchased ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula cans and Anywhere Pack should throw them away or return them to where it was purchased. If possible, record the lot number with a photo of the product & lot information.
  • If your infant is experiencing symptoms related to infant botulism and has consumed ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, go to the Emergency Department immediately. See below for symptoms of botulism.
  • Wash items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled formula using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.
  • To report an illness or adverse event, you can contact our office at 360-778-6000 (press option 2, then option 3).
  • Retailers should stop selling the affected product and dispose of any remaining in stock.
  • If parents have questions, please contact the manufacturer via email at hello@byheart.com. For more information, visit byheart.com or call 1 (833) 429-4327.
