Attempted murder charged dropped in Whatcom Superior Court plea deal

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A man suspected in a 2021 shooting has pled guilty to 2 counts of 2nd-degree robbery. Baker also pled guilty to felony attempting to elude a police vehicle. He has been sentenced 10 years in custody with credit for time served. The initial charge of 1st-degree attempted murder was dropped.

Scott Richard Baker, age 53 at the time, was arrested July 15, 2021, after a man was found shot at a residence on Mount Baker Highway and Baker was located while attempting to flee via Valley Highway near Acme. WCSO arrested and booked Baker into Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of 1st degree attempted murder along with eluding and misdemeanor hit and run.

Baker’s case had been stalled in the court while awaiting a competency evaluation and subsequent capacity/competency hearing.

The shooting victim, Wade Ray Dickerson, age 57, was later arrested after contacting a family member of Baker’s. During these contacts, Dickerson reportedly asked for $150,000 and in return would say that Baker did not shoot him. Dickerson pled guilty to 1 of 2 counts of bribe receiving by a witness, a class B felony, and the second charge was dismissed. He was sentenced to 6 months in custody with credit for time served.
