Amtrak train service through Bellingham severely impacted

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Amtrak announced yesterday, Wednesday, March 26, 2025, that several routes nationwide were cancelled due to the removal of some passenger cars from service. Of these, 26 cars were removed on the Amtrak Cascades northbound and southbound routes to 18 stations between Vancouver, BC, and Eugene, OR, through Seattle. This affects all but 1 train on the Amtrak Cascades daily service.

In compliance with federal requirements and its ongoing commitment to safety, Amtrak routinely inspects its railcars and locomotives. We discovered corrosion in several Horizon railcars and, while working with the manufacturer, decided to remove the equipment from service after learning of additional areas of concern from intensive inspections of multiple cars. The removal of this equipment from service will affect services on several routes: Downeaster, Hiawatha, Borealis, and Amtrak Cascades. Some trains, such as the Downeaster, will operate with fewer cars, while other services will be provided substitute transportation until a long-term plan is developed.

The most up to date arrival and departure times are available on Amtrak.com, our free mobile app or by text or phone 1-877-231-9448 to speak with an Amtrak Customer Care Specialist.

The 1 remaining train serves routes #503 and #508 running daily between Seattle and Eugene.

Amtrak “Thruway” buses have been provided as the “substitute transportation.” For passengers rerouted via bus, the following has been announced by Amtrak.

  • until further notice, buses have been chartered as substitute transportation for most scheduled trains
  • bicycle reservations will be honored on the buses
  • business class passengers will be provided refunds for the cost difference from coach class, as buses do not support business class

Passengers are advised to stay up-to-date via the Amtrak.com and AmtrakCascades.com websites.
