350 apartment development proposed in Ferndale

FERNDALE, Wash. — A public hearing by the City of Ferndale’s Hearing Examiner is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15th, at 1:30pm regarding a planned unit development (PUD) on Portal Way according to a recent public notice.

According to the most recently updated project narrative, the proposed PUD will include the following across the approximately 18-acre property located between McKinley Street and Kaas Rd on the east side of Portal Way.

  • 11 buildings
  • 350 multifamily dwelling units
  • 1 of the buildings will include 12,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor
  • 1 centrally located building will serve as a community clubhouse

Comments from Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to a traffic study done by the applicant mentioned “serious concerns” about an expected 20% traffic increase at a nearby I-5 interchange. As a result, they requested “that necessary mitigation measures be performed.”

According to the public notice, citizens can comment on the PUD between August 2nd and 15th by email to comment@cityofferndale.org and by attending the meeting remotely (no in-person attendance information was provided in the notice) by following the information provided here.

City of Ferndale staff responded to an inquiry from Whatcom News stating, “in-person attendance for making a statement during the public hearing is encouraged (remote/phone comments also allowed). The meeting location is the City Annex, 5694 Second Avenue.”
