20-year-old Bellingham man dies after crashing motorcycle on I-5

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) reports via a WSP press memo that a 20-year-old Bellingham man died after crashing on a motorcycle northbound on I-5 at the Northwest Avenue interchange.

The man was reportedly northbound on I-5 on a red 2006 Honda CBR600 about 12:30am on Thursday, October 31st, when it failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and struck a barrier on the left shoulder. The man was ejected and came to rest on the roadway. The Honda came to rest against the cable barrier in the median.

According to radio transmissions at the time, a WSP trooper reported having observed the motorcycle northbound on I-5 going over 100mph without their lights on. Due to the speed and no lights, the trooper did not attempt a pursuit. The trooper soon came upon the crash scene just north of the Northwest Avenue interchange and requested medical aid.

According to the press memo, the man was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center where he was later declared dead.

The man was reported to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The crash remains under investigation.

The northbound lanes were closed and vehicles diverted off I-5 at the Northwest Avenue interchange until nearly 6am due to the crash and resulting investigation. A southbound lane was also temporarily closed after debris from the crash was discovered in the left lane.
