2 and their pet rescued from atop a vehicle surrounded by rising water

DEMING, Wash. — At approximately 7:50 pm on Saturday, October 19th, emergency services were called to the 4600 block of Valley Highway (SR9) following reports of individuals trapped on a vehicle surrounded by water.

Officials with Whatcom County Fire District 1 (WCFD1) issued a statement saying they and WCFD16, with the help of mutual aid partners, responded to the area under the “USA Bridge. spanning the North Fork Nooksack River. They arrived to find 2 individuals and a dog stranded atop a pickup truck surrounded by rising water.

Crews from WCFD#1, Whatcom County Fire District #16, Everson Police Department, Bellingham Fire Department, and Whatcom Search and Rescue (SAR) worked quickly to reach the trapped individuals. A WCFD#1 rescue swimmer safely retrieved both people and their dog, and no injuries were reported.

The pickup truck, along with an unoccupied RV nearby, remains in the river and will be removed once water levels drop and recovery crews can safely access the area.
