Traffic westbound on Main Street was unusually heavy for the hours before, during and after lunch today. It’s unknown how much that had to do with today’s accident.
About 2pm today. a pickup looking to pull out of a driveway in the 1900 block of Main Street was reportedly pulling across the sidewalk in the hope there would be a break in traffic. The driver reported seeing a young girl on a bike appear out of the corner of his eye and hearing a “thump” sound.
The bike rider was riding eastbound on the sidewalk on north side of Main Street. The young girl was checked out by medics and determined to have only minor bumps and scratches. She had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Her bike’s front wheel was bent to the point of not being usable.
The impact left a noticeable indentation in the fender above the pickup’s right-front wheel.
The pickup driver was not cited according to Ferndale Police.
Ironically, after fire and police had left the scene, a westbound driver graciously stopped, waved and honked their horn to encourage the pickup in the driveway to pull into traffic. But this time there was no one in the pickup as the driver was helping carry the victim’s bike to her parents’ vehicle.
