GLACIER, Wash. — Today, Monday, July 11th, Washington State Department of Transportation officials announced the final 1.8-mile section of the Mount Baker Highway (SR542) has been reopened to vehicles.

The Heather Meadows Visitor Center and the gate at the Terminal Lake parking lot were reopened on July 1st.

Reopening was delayed due to late season snowfall and the need to inspect temporary repairs made last year to a crumbling retaining wall above the Heather Meadows Visitor Center.

Each winter, WSDOT closes the narrow section of road with sharp curves and steep slopes to vehicle traffic to keep travelers safe, while at the same time a portion of the road becomes part of the Mt. Baker Ski Area’s terrain.
