Wrong way driver causes I-5 crash in Blaine, arrested for DUI

BLAINE, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) were dispatched about 6:10pm on Thursday, March 12, 2026, to report of a 2-vehicle crash involving a wrong way driver on southbound I-5 in the area of the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange.

According to WSP radio transmissions at the time, both vehicles ended up in a ditch several feet off the roadway.

According to WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding, the crash resulted in damage to both vehicles and minor injuries to the occupants. The driver of the causing vehicle was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

In a social media post, Harding said, “that [the crash] miraculously resulted in only minor injuries.”
