Contractors will return to work on the I-5 bridges crossing the Nooksack River both south- and north-bound beginning Monday night, May 11. At that time, crews will begin painting the overhead beams on both bridges.
Washington State Department of Transportation says drivers can expect about three weeks of single lane closures and a speed limit reduction from 70 to 60 mph near both bridges from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday nights through Thursday mornings.
After painting the overhead beams on both bridges, additional work will remain to be done on the northbound bridge. This will also require narrow lanes, a speed limit reduction from 70 to 60 mph 24 hours a day and nighttime lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday nights through Thursday mornings.
It is expected to take an additional month to finish painting the northbound bridge and all work is scheduled to finish by July. But the schedule is very much dependent on the weather.
