Wood Fires Push Air Quality Closer to “Unhealthy” Level

air quality gauge - mid moderate rangeNW Clean Air Agency’s Loomis Road monitoring station reported a WAQA index measure of 80 at 6am this morning, November 29th. That is within the “Moderate” range (51-100) but is the highest Discover Ferndale has seen while periodically checking during the National Weather Service’s Air Stagnation Advisory.

The subsequent report of 72 at 7am reflected the same decreases seen in previous mornings since the advisory had been issued.

While not indicating at what times, the data from the air monitoring station indicates that air quality over the past 24 hours (11/28/15 8am to 11/29/15 8am) has been “Good” 44% of the time, “Moderate” 40% of the time and “Unhealthy for Some Groups” 16% of the time.

A measure above 100 on the Washington Air Quality Advisory (WAQA) index would prompt warnings about air “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,” including infants, children and adults over 65.

“Moderate” air quality also prompts warnings to some groups to limit going outside including,

    • those with lung and heart disease, diabetes or a current respiratory infection
    • those who have had a stroke
