The National Weather Service (NWS) Seattle office has issued a Winter Storm Warning for 6pm this evening through 12pm Thursday due to expected severe winter weather conditions.

The warning has been issued for western Whatcom County, including Ferndale, and forewarns of between 1 to 3 inches of snow overnight transitioning to freezing rain by Thursday morning.

By noon Thursday, ice accumulations from freezing rain could reach a quarter inch, with lesser amounts near the coastline including Bellingham.

Temperatures at or below freezing, combined with snow tonight and freezing rain Thursday morning, will cause slippery road conditions. Driving and walking conditions will be particularly hazardous as ice accumulates Thursday morning, NWS warns.

The freezing rain will transition to rain by Thursday afternoon.

Freezing rain can weight down and cause trees and tree branches to fall raising the potential for power outages and property damage.

Drivers should take adequate precautions and be prepared if driving during the freezing rain cannot be avoided. The NWS advises to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
