Whatcom Sheriff’s deputies injured in shooting are released from the hospital

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Officials with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) announced today, February 14th, both deputies who were shot while responding to an incident in Maple Falls on Thursday, February 10th, have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.

WCSO released their names today but as is policy with any other crime victims, Whatcom News will not be publishing their names out of respect for their and their families’ privacy.

The 2 deputies have been with WCSO for 13 years and 16 years.

The shooter, Joel Berck Young, age 60 of Maple Falls, has since been arrested and made a preliminary appearance in Whatcom County Superior Court charged with 2 counts of 1st degree attempted murder. He remains in custody pending being able to post a $5 million bond.
