From the editor:
You probably figure — like so many do when it comes to financially supporting a local business — that “others” will do it for you. But that is not happening.
You may have noticed some recent gaps in Whatcom-News.com’s coverage. Since I am unable to afford assistants and support staff, when I fall ill or get involved in non-business business, that is going to happen.
That is why I am appealing to you today.
Please consider being a financial supporter of Whatcom-News.com to minimize these interruptions and enable building out “just the facts” coverage of local news that is important to you and your neighbors.
It is not in my nature to say things like, “I need your help” or “Please support my work.” I have always preached that revenues will follow doing good work and that has happened on the advertising side as much as can be expected during this age of dwindling advertising revenues.
Providing near real-time news coverage 24/7 means being up at 4:30am on a Tuesday during a weather event, standing in the rain at 11pm on a Sunday at a first responder incident, attending meetings, working with key staff and public information officers to get the latest official details and spending hours each day poring over official publications and records.
Doing it Whatcom-News.com-style also means developing constructive relationships with local agencies and newsmakers and not getting in the way at incidents (instead, helping whenever possible). For example, first responders benefitted from my monitoring of radio communications across several agencies during the mid-November 2021 flood disaster. I contacted and shared this information between agencies who were busy with their own areas of responsibilities and benefited from learning what other agencies were dealing with.
But you may see more gaps in coverage as I am not getting any younger and do like to take a day off now and then. If I could hand the ball off to someone now and then, these gaps would be a thing of the past.
Do not worry, you are not going to discover a paywall (limiting how many articles can be read without a paid subscription) on Whatcom-News.com anytime soon. That would be doing a big disservice to the advertisers by limiting the size of the audience they reach.
So, if you like near real-time local news that does not tell you what to think but instead gives you the facts and lets you decide for yourself and want to see more of it and help it last, please consider being a financial supporter. I and all your fellow readers thank you.

Is my donation tax-deductable?
No, it is not. Whatcom News is not a charity. It is a for-profit business. Your support funds freelance reporters, equipment and service fees needed to research, compile and publish community news.
How can I, as a supporter, influence editorial decision-making?
