As of 4:30pm, a fast-moving weather system continues to move north through Puget Sound this afternoon and should be arriving into the Ferndale area in as little as an hour.
The Ferndale area has been enjoying an unseasonably warm day today with a high of 81° reported by a weather station near Ferndale High School.
National Weather Service forecasters reported about 3:30pm this afternoon that a few thunderstorms had appeared over Lewis County this afternoon and had since moved into King, Mason, and Thurston counties. They warned to expect the number of thunderstorms to increase over mainly the interior (east of the Olympic range) during the next couple of hours.
Heavy hail has been reported in areas already hit by this system.
While there have been no official warnings issued for the Ferndale area, thunderstorms continue to be forecast this evening before 11pm.
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for locations along the border noting “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.”
