FERNDALE, Wash. — Ferndale School District officials reported this morning, December 1st, that staff and students at Ferndale High School were placed on lockdown status as a result of a social media video of a weapon on campus.
The following announcement, provided to Whatcom News by the Ferndale School District, was sent out to families about 9:20am.
This morning it was reported that there was a possible weapon on campus. A Snapchat video was reported to administration and the Ferndale Police Department was notified immediately. The suspect has left school grounds and law enforcement is working to locate him. Ferndale High School was placed on lockdown once we were notified of the situation.
The weapon is believed to be a BB gun. However, we cannot stress how seriously we take matters that involve students and staff safety. We are working with law enforcement in this investigation and will be taking appropriate disciplinary action.

The following is a later notice sent out about noon today.
Dear Ferndale Families,
Thank you all for your patience while we investigated the situation and evaluated the information as it developed. The suspect was in communication with FPD and is aware that he is being sought out. After consultation with Ferndale Police Department, we are lifting the lockdown that was put into place this morning. We have credible information that the suspect is no longer in the county and are notifying neighboring law enforcement officials. We will continue to monitor the situation and will remain in close contact with law enforcement officials.
