UPDATED: Tsunami statement issued for US/Canadian coasts following 7.5M earthquake in Taiwan

About 5:10pm (Pacific Time) on Tuesday, April 2nd, a tsunami statement was issued for the Pacific coastal regions of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California by the NOAA/National Weather Service US Tsunami Warning System after an earthquake had been detected in the Pacific Ocean near Taiwan about 5pm. Initial reports were of a magnitude 7.5 earthquake.

As of 5:45pm, the levels of danger for US and Canadian coasts were still being evaluated. Estimates placed the arrival of any potential tsunami to the Washington coastal region at about 5am tomorrow and Bellingham Bay about 6:35am.

TSUNAMI WAVES REACHING 1 TO 3 METERS [3 to 9 feet] ABOVE THE TIDE LEVEL ARE POSSIBLE ALONG SOME COASTS OF CHINA… AND TAIWAN.

TSUNAMI WAVES ARE FORECAST TO BE LESS THAN 0.3 METERS ABOVE THE TIDE LEVEL FOR THE COASTS OF GUAM… INDONESIA… NORTHERN MARIANAS… PALAU… PHILIPPINES… REPUBLIC OF KOREA… VIETNAM… AND YAP.

[REGARDING US/Canada west coasts]

Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center is analyzing the event to determine the level of danger.

There is no tsunami danger for the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia, or Alaska.

Some of the areas listed above may experience non-damaging sea level changes.
