A woman suffered minor injuries after crashing the 2002 Lincoln LS she was driving into the raised railroad bed and ending up on the railroad tracks at the end of Aldergrove Road shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, January 17th.
Soon after, a train crashed into the Lincoln causing significant damage to the car. According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Matt Huffman, the driver had left the vehicle when she saw the train approaching.
Whatcom County Fire District Division Chief Ben Boyko said the driver was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center as a precaution due to injuries sustained in the initial crash.
BNSF Rail spokesperson Gus Melonas said there was no damage to the train or injuries to the crew.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said Courtney L. Kinney, age 18, was cited for driving under the influence (DUI) and released to the hospital.
