FERNDALE, Wash. — City of Ferndale officials reopened W Smith Road west of LaBounty Drive shortly after 8am this morning after surface water flooding forced them to close the road Friday, June 12th.
Ferndale Public Works Supervisor Bo Westford said crews were able to patch holes in the road but the surface would remain rough until sometime in the future when they are able to pave it.
Surface water flowing north to south across the road has in the past been due to overflowing from ponds and swales located to the north between Hovander Road and LaBounty Drive.
Ferndale Communications Officer Riley Sweeney said in an email, “some culvert work by BNSF” was helpful in being able to reopen the road.
The road is well-traveled by people heading to and from Hovander Homestead Park and Tennant Lake as well as several businesses including Superfeet International, Hertco Kitchens, Hempler Foods Group and Northwest Fence.
