Drivers can expect to take a relatively short detour route around a planned closure of the section of Slater Road between Lake Terrell Road and Elder Road beginning tomorrow, Monday, May 1st. The closure is due to a construction project that will replace a failing culvert under the road.

The Whatcom County Public Works (WCPW) website says there will be “a signed detour route in place during construction which will include Elder Road, Unick Road and Lake Terrell Road for local traffic. The truck detour will include I-5, Grandview Road, Kickerville Road and Lake Terrell Road.” See map below for the vehicle detour route.

The culvert project and resulting road closure are expected to continue into late 2017 or early 2018. The culvert will be replaced with a 140-foot span bridge.

The section of road is on the primary route to many businesses in the area including Phillips 66 refinery and Alcoa Intalco Works as well as for residents in the Sandy Point area. According to WCPW, detour signs will direct truck traffic on I-5 to exit at Grandview Road, go west to Kickerville Road and then head south on Kickerville.
