Last November, the speed limit on Portal Way between Brown Road and Enterprise Road was reduced from 45mph to 35mph for safety reasons due to the deteriorated road surface. At the time, a project was already scheduled for this spring to grind and grade about 1 mile of roadway, repair areas of base failure and add a 2-inch asphalt overlay.

The project got underway mid-May and the project area had been closed to all through traffic including pedestrian since. A detour route was provided via Grandview and Enterprise Roads. At the time, it was estimated the closure would last into late June or mid-July, between 6 and 8 weeks.

The reopening occurred ahead of schedule, just short of the 6 week estimate.

The project is estimated to cost about $790,000 and will be paid using $680,700 in grant funding from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) and the remainder of costs from the Ferndale Transportation Benefit District (TBD) revenues and the Ferndale Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) 2 fund.
