Stars are twinkling in the clear sky and freezing and there are freezing or near-freezing temperatures around the area this morning. Much of the frozen precipitation that fell yesterday has not had a chance to melt yet.
After yesterday’s heavy rains and bit of frozen precipitation, roads remain wet. In many places this means a frozen road surface and black ice.
Some roads are likely to still have standing water after yesterday’s heavy rain which may also be frozen at least in part.
Drivers are advised to be alert on overpasses and bridges which are most susceptible to freezing due to cold air flowing both above and below the road surface.
Pedestrians should take care as well. Sidewalks are not immune to the ice. Fortunately, Ferndale schools begin Winter Break today.
As this story was being written at 4:30am, aid and law enforcement were dispatched to a car versus snow plow crash with injuries on northbound I-5 near the Main Street interchange.
Slater Road and many other roads impacted by the surface water flooding remain impacted but also remain open.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time to get where you are going, slow down and maintain greater distances between vehicles under these conditions.
UPDATE 6:20am
Some observations after driving around the area this morning:
All roads remain open although Imhof, W Smith and Slater Roads still have water over the roadways. Portal Way no longer has water over the roadway but there remains visible compact snow and ice.
In general, roads in the higher elevations and north of Main Street have residual frozen stuff leftover from yesterday.
Slick road surfaces were adjacent to not so slick areas meaning do not assume from one block to the next as conditions will vary.
In short, the roads around the Ferndale area remain open and are passable but are also slick.
Pedestrians should also take care and be aware of ice while walking outside. Well-traveled roads that be dry can be next to ice covered sidewalks and driveways.
