FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) warn drivers that for 24-hours-a-day beginning Monday, July 13th, drivers on northbound I-5 will encounter a lane closure and be directed onto a bypass lane north of Custer Rest Area. A similar bypass was recently in place at the same location for southbound traffic.
Crews will be replacing an old culvert, as was recently done under the southbound lanes, with a new, larger structure intended to make it easier for salmon and steelhead to reach spawning grounds. Work and traffic impacts will continue until Sunday, July 19th, officials say.
While that work is going on, WSDOT contractor crews will also be replacing a culvert under Zell Road, just east of I-5. That will result in the closure of Zell Road, just north of Willeys Lake Road, until July 23rd. Zell Road will be open to local access only between Custer Schoolhouse Road and Willeys Lake Road during this time.
The contractor is expected to begin replacing a culvert under Grandview Road at Portal Way later in August. That work will require closing the intersection for about five days to provide a safe work zone.
Drivers can monitor real-time traffic alerts on the My Ferndale News Traffic page before heading out.
