UPDATED: Driver faces vehicular homicide charge after semi-truck vs car fatality crash.

EVERSON, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a car versus semi-truck serious injury crash south of Everson in the 6500 block of Lawrence Road about 11:20am today, June 23rd.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Will Glahn told Whatcom News this was a fatality crash. A passenger in the car died at the scene and the driver was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center in critical condition.

A press memo issued by WSP at 5:40pm today said the crash occurred when a blue 2007 Kia Spectra hatchback was southbound when it crossed the center line, left the roadway on the east side and then reentered the roadway continuing south when it collided with a northbound white 2019 International semi-truck pulling a trailer.

According to a photo from the scene shared by WSP, the semi-truck was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with 3 smaller trailers and ended up off the road in a field.

The driver of the Kia was identified as Sylvia K Martinez, age 26, of Bellingham. Investigators determined Martinez was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and drugs and/or alcohol were involved. Martinez faces a vehicular homicide charge while the investigation continues

A juvenile passenger that died at the scene has not been identified pending next of kin notification. Investigators determined the passenger was seatbelted at the time of the crash.

The driver of the International was not injured.

Lawrence Road (SR9) remained closed to all traffic between Siper and Hopewell Roads until after 5pm.
