If you are getting ready to leave your office in rainy Bellingham, you may be in for a bit of a surprise.
It has been snowing with some earnest all afternoon in the Ferndale area and there is up to an inch of accumulated snow and slush on the roads. On bridges and overpasses, due to the subfreezing temperatures today, drivers should be alert for the potential of ice and compact snow.

Click for more information- A crash on southbound I-5 just south of the Nooksack River bridge caused a significant traffic back up and a sympathetic one northbound. It has been cleared but the damage has been done.
- Traffic avoiding the crash on I-5 have created a back up from the Portal Way interchange down 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue to the downtown area.
- A semi truck with trailer has broken down on eastbound Main Street at 3rd Avenue and traffic is struggling to get around. UPDATE 5:20pm – the disabled truck has been moved.
- Westbound Main Street is backed up from 3rd Avenue east to the I-5 interchange and onto the northbound I-5 off-ramp.
- A car vs pedestrian crash at Main Street and Douglas Road was reported just as this story was being written.
The result is a potentially long commute that holds potential to get worse in the event of more crashes due to slick roads.
City of Ferndale (COF) Public Works Foreman James Slaughter said, as of 3:30pm Wednesday, 4 Public Works trucks had been dispatched to begin applying sand on “slick spots” on COF priority routes.
If a recommendation were to be made, perhaps Slater Road would be worthwhile alternate route if heading north from Bellingham to the Ferndale area.
