UPDATED: Fatal collision involving a pedestrian Thursday morning closes roads

BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 5:35am on Thursday, September 15th, to the area of the intersection of Loomis Trail Road and Portal Way due to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Deb Slater told Whatcom News via email that this was a single vehicle versus pedestrian collision at the north intersection of Portal Way and Loomis Trail Road.

According to Slater, a truck was traveling southbound on Portal Way and struck a male pedestrian who was in the roadway and wearing dark clothing in a dimly lit area before sunrise.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene, but his identity was unknown as of 9:40am.  Bellingham Police responded to scan fingerprints to assist in determining his identity.

Washington State Patrol troopers documented the incident scene.

There were no indications the driver was driving while impaired, Slater said.

Due to the investigation work at the scene, roads leading to the intersection were closed.

The road closures were at Loomis Trail Road at Kickerville Road, Portal Way at the east leg of Loomis Trail Road and Portal Way to the north of Loomis Trail Road. The roads were reopened just before 9am.
