They had enjoyed their time up in Birch Bay and were heading home this morning when people starting honking at them while heading through Ferndale.
A little after 9am today, a Marysville couple were heading home through Ferndale in their motorhome while towing a Nissan Pathfinder. According to Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko, the brakes on the towed vehicle overheated and caused the front tires to catch on fire.
Fortunately, passersby got the attention of the couple who then stopped on 2nd Avenue and were able to use their fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
One of the owners said the mechanism to disengage the Nissan’s brakes while being towed appeared to be working properly when they left Birch Bay but he noticed unusual slack in the cable after the fire. Both front tires appeared to have been destroyed.
The Nissan was moved to a parking spot where Ferndale Police and SCORE officers worked to ensure the fire stayed extinguished. Boyko noted the back brake drums were also extremely hot.
Arrangements were made to tow the Nissan to an auto repair shop.
