The last four days brought in, not one, but two significant windstorms. As a result, many Ferndale neighbors are looking at cleaning up after downed trees and repairing property damage.
But, Better Business Bureau Northwest warns,
Storms like these can also blow-in scammers looking to profit from others misfortune. Better Business Bureau Northwest is reminding homeowners to beware of door-to-door solicitors who may offer shoddy home repairs, or who might try and take their money and run.
These contractors lack proper registration, training and licensing. Some take payment but do not stand behind their work, if they do any work at all.
The BBB NW provides these tips to help avoid getting scammed:
- Research a contractor online at bbb.org. BBB Accredited contractors are properly licensed, bonded and insured.
- Ask the contractor for references. Read reviews to see what past customers have to say about their experiences.
- Get a contract in writing. Be sure to take note of the company’s name, address and phone numbers.
- Never pay full prices upfront. Instead, pay for half at the beginning of the job and the other half after repairs are completed satisfactorily.
- Don’t fall victim to high-pressure tactics. Be sure to ask for a business card and follow-up later, if necessary.
