The Ferndale School District announced a special School Board meeting will be held to begin the process of “developing a community assessment.”
The meeting is scheduled to be held Monday, October 10th, 7pm at Ferndale High School’s Library. The public is invited to attend.
According to the meeting agenda, the School Board will review the history of their facilities work and then introduce a strategic positioning firm, Strategies 360, recently contracted to help develop a plan for addressing facilities needs.
After the introduction of Strategies 360, remaining items on the agenda are “beginning the process of developing a community assessment” and “initiating a capital projects task force.” Questions will then be addressed.
UPDATE 10/10/16
This morning, Superintendent Linda Quinn responded to DF’s request for clarification of which facilities, what type of needs, what “community assessment” means and, regarding the task force, who would be asked or nominated to be on it and what their responsibilities would be.
The facilities needs are the ones identified by the comprehensive assessment we had done in 2010. That review identified about $90 million in repairs/replacements that would be needed in the next ten years (2010-2020). Our consultant from Strategies 360 is going to help us develop a community assessment. She will be at the meeting tonight to explain the process. The consultant will also be giving the Board some suggestions for how they might go about putting together a Capital Projects Task Force and what this group will/should do.
DF has not been able to locate the 2010 comprehensive assessment Quinn referred to but on the District’s website there is a 30-year plan beginning 2012 which could be assumed to incorporate the assessment.
The schedule for the 30-Year Plan as provided on the District website is as follows,
| 2014 | Bond | Replace FHS, renovate WHS, relocate Maintenance & Transportation |
| 2018 | Bond | Modernize/Replace Custer and Vista |
| 2022 | Bond | Modernize/Replace North Bellingham and Horizon |
| 2026 | Bond | Modernize Eagleridge, Central and Beach |
| 2030 | Bond | Modernize Cascadia and district offices |
Not referenced in the plan
- Skyline
- Mountain View
- Horizon
In the context of developing community support for bonds, levies or other voter-approved measures, developing a community assessment typically refers to a process of collecting data (e.g. surveys) to determine what needs (e.g. health, economic) exist within a community.
