About 9pm tonight, March 25th, residents reported seeing a string of bright lights streaking across the sky. Sightings began being reported between Oregon and British Columbia.
Whatcom County Emergency Management Deputy Director John Gargett told My Ferndale News that according to information he had received it was a meteor or something breaking up while passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. There were no reports of any airplanes in distress or damage on the ground.
First responders were called to investigate a report of a possible aircraft emergency in the Birch Bay area at the same time. Soon after, there were reports of possible spot fires on Sumas Mountain. First responders were unable to locate anything of concern in either instance.
Astrophysicist Jonathon McDowell with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said via Twitter that people were witnessing the destruction of the 2nd stage of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that launched March 4th. “It failed to make a deorbit burn and is now reentering after 22 days in orbit.”
