Snow and ice event expected across Whatcom County overnight with potential for freezing rain

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Forecasters with Environment Canada and the Seattle office of the National Weather Service (NWS) are in agreement that a wet weather system is expected to arrive tonight, Tuesday, January 16th, while temperatures will be at or below freezing. The result is some snow accumulation along with a chance for freezing rain.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for much of southern British Columbia warning that a low-pressure system is expected to bring widespread snow to the area tonight and continue into Wednesday. Snow may become mixed with rain Wednesday as temperatures increase and precipitation decreases in the afternoon or early evening. There is a risk of freezing rain tonight in southern sections near the US-Canada border.

The NWS issued a winter storm warning today that will be in effect from 10pm tonight through 10pm tomorrow. The warning statement says to expect heavy mixed precipitation across western Whatcom County from Sumas to Point Roberts and south with snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches and the possibility of ice accumulation.

A winter storm warning is also in effect for locations above 1,500 feet in the western slopes of the central and northern Cascades from 4pm today through 1pm Thursday, January 18th. That warning statement says to also expect heavy mixed precipitation with snow accumulations of 16 to 40 inches and the possibility of ice accumulation.

The greatest possibility for freezing rain in the lowlands will be as the weather system arrives late tonight and again when it leaves late Wednesday.

Rain is forecast for the lowlands on Thursday and Thursday night but there is a chance for a snow and rain mix during that time.

Rain continues to be in the lowland forecast through the weekend and into next week with highs in the 40s and lows above freezing.
