FERNDALE, Wash. — For over 5 years, a search has been underway to locate someone to take over the reins at the Friendship Community Garden (FCG). It is a position in need of a master gardener with the ability to handle administrative duties and volunteer management according to current Coordinator Gloria Perez.

The garden coordinator keeps the garden on track through-out the year according to Perez. It includes interacting with individuals from a variety of cultures and life experiences, community volunteer organizations, a garden advisory group and the Ferndale community in general.

Over past years, Perez has only been able to offer this as a purely volunteer position, but the Ferndale City Council recently approved a $2,500 grant to the FCG and that can help provide a financial stipend.

FCG has been a successful community garden in Ferndale since 2008. The garden is located immediately south of Pioneer Park on City of Ferndale property. FFCG has 26 outside plots and 10 hoop house plots available to rent each year.

An onsite “Giving Garden” supplies fresh produce to the Ferndale Food Bank. Thousands of pounds of fresh produce have been grown in the Giving Garden and donated to the Ferndale Food Bank each year. In 2018, the garden donated over 5,000 pounds of restaurant-quality food.

Perez has been a FFCG volunteer since 2008 and the coordinator since 2010. The FFCG is a program of the Ferndale Community Service Cooperative.

The cost to rent one of the garden plots for a growing season is based on a sliding scale of $10 to $20. There is also a $10 refundable cleaning fee and gardeners are required to put in 15 hours of volunteer work at the garden during the season.

Anyone interested in more details about the coordinator opportunity or renting a garden plot should contact Perez via email to rainglo@comcast.net or by phone at 360-223-3836.
