FERNDALE, Wash. — A backhoe being hauled by a semi truck on a flatbed trailer reportedly struck the northbound I-5 overpass at the Portal Way interchange.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Ferndale Police were dispatched to the area about 10am this morning, August 17th, and found the truck and trailer had moved on. Minimal damage to the overpass and a some gravel debris on Portal Way could be seen. The truck and trailer were soon located by WSP south of Main Street on southbound I-5.

Washington State Department of Transportation were reported to have been contacted to inspect the damage in the event repairs are needed. It was unknown if any charges or citations would be issued to the driver.
This is the same location that was struck in a similar fashion back in March of 2017. More significant damage and traffic impacts resulted from a high-speed impact to the Birch Bay-Lynden Road overpass in 2015. That incident resulted in traffic impacts for months until repairs could be completed.
