Section of Thornton Street to be closed 24/7 for months

FERNDALE, Wash. — A well-traveled section of Thornton Street in Ferndale is expected to be closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, beginning April 3rd continuing into the fall months due to road work.

City of Ferndale announced today, March 27th, that motorists should expect delays around the closed section of Thornton Street between Vista Drive and Malloy Avenue. A detour will be set up directing motorists through the roundabout at Malloy Avenue and Vista.

Approximate location of road closure

The road will be closed to through traffic. Residents within the closure area can expect delays when entering and exiting the work area. A pedestrian pathway will be provided through the work area.

The work is associated with a project to reconstruct and widen Thornton Street to current standards between Vista Drive to Malloy Avenue.

According to the City of Ferndale website, this project will improve pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle safety. Upgrades will be made to the existing utilities, including storm, water and sanitary sewer systems. Sidewalks will be installed in compliance with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards including curb ramps on both sides of the road. Street lighting will also be upgraded or added where needed.

This section of Thornton Street is close to the Thornton Street overpass that is currently under construction.
