WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Whatcom County Public Works has designs underway for the installation of roundabouts at some key intersections across Whatcom County.
Birch Bay-Lynden Road and Blaine Road (SR548)
The improvements designed for the intersection include a compact roundabout. Public benefits are said to include the following.
- improved multi-modal safety by reducing conflict points between various roadway users
- curb-separated pedestrian and bicyclist facilities
- improved traffic flow through the intersection while ensuring reduced speeds at the intersection
- improved drainage through the intersection
The project has begun the Right of Way and Permitting phases. Construction is currently planned for the summer of 2025.
E Smith Road and Hannegan Road
Designs are to rebuild the intersection with a new multi-lane roundabout. Public benefits are said to include the following.
- improve multi-modal safety by reducing conflict points between various roadway users
- provide curb-separated pedestrian and bicyclist facilities
- improve traffic flow through the intersection while ensuring reduced speeds at the intersection
- improved water quality with the addition of stormwater treatment and detention
Construction was originally planned for the summer of 2021 and is currently being planned for the summer of 2024.
W Smith Road and Northwest Drive
This project is in the early stages of determining what improvements will be designed and constructed. Currently, there are no specific plans or timeline for construction.
