BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 just south of the Sunset Drive interchange about 5:30pm due to a report of a rollover crash.
Initial reports from the scene were of an injured occupant of a vehicle on its top on the right shoulder.
As of 5:40pm, traffic was backed up for over a mile in the northbound lanes.
According to the EMS dispatch log service, PulsePoint, at least 1 person was transported by ambulance from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Anthony Reese told Whatcom News this was a 3-car crash, and the causing driver was in custody for suspicion of driving under the influence. A passenger in a Honda sedan that ended up on its roof needed assistance from aid crews to get out and was transported by a medic unit to the hospital with potentially serious injuries. There were no other significant injuries reported.
As of 7pm, 1 of the northbound lanes was open to traffic while the other remained closed.
