BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the scene of a rollover crash in the median of I-5 south of the Slater Road interchange today, June 9th, at 11:15am.
Initial reports from the scene were of a single vehicle crash with a single occupant.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Bellingham Fire Department were dispatched.
WSP had the left lane of northbound I-5 blocked as of 11:25am.
As of 11:40am, southbound and northbound drivers through the area were experiencing significant backups.
WSP reported both northbound I-5 lanes had been reopened by 12pm (noon) to traffic while they continued to investigate the crash from the median and left shoulder.
WSP Trooper Rocky Oliphant said the driver of the rolled vehicle was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with minor injuries although there had been concern at the scene of the crash of more serious injuries.
Oliphant said the investigation determined the silver 2008 Jeep Liberty moved from the right to the left lane and collided with a black 2017 GMC Acadia in the process.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were considered to have contributed to the crash and the driver of the Jeep was cited for an unsafe lane change.
