The heavy rains are now past says the National Weather Service but downstream from the mountains Ferndale still gets to wait for the expected results of those rains in the form of minor flooding. An Areal Flood Watch that includes the lower North Fork of the Nooksack River (the portion that flows through Ferndale) remains in effect through Friday afternoon.
The current Nooksack River level forecast for Ferndale predicts it will crest late Friday morning at about 19 feet, which is considered the official flood level.
While the river is not expected to crest until later tomorrow morning, Friday, January 29th, some of the most susceptible roads have already become covered side-to-side with a few inches of water. Those include:
- Ferndale Road both north and south of Slater Road
- Barrett & Paradise Roads at the corner where they meet
It is probable the above roads will be closed to through traffic soon.
Drivers are advised to monitor the Road Closures page on Discover Ferndale before heading out on the road for the next couple days as conditions are expected to worsen through Friday.
