WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Heavy mountain and local rains drove up the Nooksack River level over the weekend. The river crested at the upper sections Sunday after reaching minor flood stage levels at the Saxon Bridge gage near Acme and at the North Cedarville gage near Deming. It crested in Ferndale today, Monday, January 29th, before noon within the minor flood stage range.
The river and other nearby rivers and streams overtopped their banks beginning Sunday leading to water and debris flowing over roads leading to several closures. Whatcom News was able to determine Slater Road, Marine Drive and Gillies Road had been closed Sunday.
Everson Mayor Perry said that while they were seeing water over roads in town, it was the result of surface water backed up in storm drains, not flooding of river water.
