Significant road surface damage on Ferndale Terrace and Douglas Road have required closing sections of both temporarily according City staff.
Warnings were made and restrictions put in place last weekend regarding the danger to certain roads as the ground beneath underwent thawing after days of subfreezing temperatures.
But today, crews were alerted to holes and bulges in the road surfaces at these two locations. As a result, the closures were implemented.
At least one instance of damage appeared to be an example of a “frost boil.”
Ferndale Terrace, between Hendrickson and Seamount Drive is closed to all traffic and is open to only eastbound traffic between Seamount Drive and Birch Drive. A detour is in place via Hawthorne Street.
Douglas Road is closed to all traffic between the entrance to the Lamplighter Mobile Park and Sunlight Lane. A detour is in place via Ulrich Road.
Douglas Road was on the list of roads with weight restrictions set in place yesterday by the City.
A project, Ferndale Terrace Stormwater Improvement, is planned to reconstruct and widen Ferndale Terrace in the near future. This project is expected to bring the road surface up to current standards.
