According to a Facebook event page, protestors are planning a “peaceful protest against the donkey basketball and Donkey Sports, Inc.” Saturday evening before the scheduled Donkey Basketball Fundraiser.
Last weekend, the Whatcom Humane Society had put forth a request for the event to be canceled. Since then, a number of organizations and individuals joined in to request the same. The Ferndale School District determined to continue the bi-annual event this year and responded,
We will share the communication we have received from the animal rights group with our students. They will have the conversation about whether this is the type of event that should continue in the future.
As of the time of this article, noon on February 12th, there were 12 people who had indicated they would be attending the protest. Protestors are able to assemble in the public right-of-ways surrounding the school campus but not on the campus itself. According to information on the protest Facebook event page, “the public sidewalk leading to the school parking lot would be the appropriate place for us to assemble.”
