WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Fires on private property on Sumas Mountain generated concern since they were visible from many areas in western Whatcom County.
Whatcom County Fire District 16 Fire Chief Hank Maleng told Whatcom News fires had been lit earlier today, Monday, November 6th, on private property and were being done under permits issued by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Note: This story has been corrected to reflect that these were not “prescribed burns” by DNR. The fires were set and managed by the property owner. DNR was only involved in granting the permits for the fires on private property.
