This morning a driver was fortunate to walk away with no significant injuries after wedging a small pickup truck between a utility pole and a fence in the 900 block of West Smith Road near Northwest Drive just before 8:30am today.

At the time this story was written, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies were still investigating how the blue Toyota pickup truck ended up nearly on its side in the ditch, facing the opposite direction of traffic and between the pole and fence. The fence lines the Phillips 66 Soccer Park parking lot.

The driver, the only person reported to have been in the vehicle, was assessed by medics at the scene and released with no significant injuries.

Firefighters from Whatcom County Fire District 7 were also at the scene and took precautionary measures due to a significant amount of gasoline leaking into the ditch.

Traffic through the crash scene was reduced to one lane while first responders completed their work with firefighters providing traffic control.

Puget Sound Energy was advised the crash involved one of their poles but no outage was reported in the area.
