Persons parked outside Samish Way business flee after driver is assaulted

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officers arrested a 22-year-old man after responding to a report of a strongarm robbery outside a business in the 100 block of Samish Way about 1:25am on Saturday, May 11th.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by prosecutors in Whatcom County Superior Court, BPD officers were told 2 people were sitting in a car when an unknown man opened the driver’s door and began punching him. While punching the driver, the assailant was reported to have been heard ordering the driver to give the assailant his things.

The driver was able to get away in the car. Witnesses reported seeing 2 men running from the car as it drove away.

According to police radio transmissions at the time, a description of the assailant and the vehicle he left in was broadcast and within a few minutes a traffic stop was done on a suspect vehicle approximately a half-mile away.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, a suspect was taken back to the scene and positively identified.

The suspect, identified as Devin Aaron Winters, age 22, faces a felony count of 2nd-degree robbery in Whatcom County Superior Court. According to jail records, Winters posted $20,000 bond on May 13th and was released from custody.
