Most areas around Ferndale saw an additional 2 to 3 inches of snow fall overnight. Combined with varying temperatures this morning made driving a challenge.
The National Weather Service initially expected snow to turn to rain by noon yesterday but then adjusted their forecast to expect it to change before midnight. But, again, they revised the forecast to expect temperatures to rise above freezing or at least stop snowing by 4am.
By 8am this morning a light rain was falling but temperatures around Ferndale remained in the upper 20s in the Ferndale area.
Driving well traveled roads remained a challenge on sloped areas due to compact snow and ice. Less traveled roads were also a challenge as they were covered with loose snow and slush.
Tow companies and law enforcement agencies were swamped with reports of single-vehicle crashes from around Whatcom County.
Road conditions varied greatly even across short distances. For instance, the eastbound lane of Slater Road from Haxton Way to I-5 was covered with compact snow and ice. But, on the same road, the westbound lane was bare and wet with occasional compact snow and ice.
As of 1pm, Most well-traveled roads in and around Ferndale were bare and wet with slush in places. Temperatures in the Ferndale area had risen to around freezing, 32°. To the north, temperatures were 2 to 3 degrees colder and 2 to 3 degrees warmer to the south.
The forecast is for temperatures in the area to reach a high of 39° today with an overnight low of 38° with an 80% chance of rain. The high temperature tomorrow, Sunday, is expected to reach 40° but drop again to below freezing overnight.
The weather forecast for Monday and several days following are for sunny days, clear skies and below-freezing temperatures. Fortunately, winds are not part of that forecast.
What frozen precipitation remains when temperatures drop below freezing Sunday night can be expected to remain as the high temperatures are not expected to go above freezing again until the following week.
