FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the west end of Cherry Street in Ferndale about 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 17th.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Assistant Fire Chief Ben Boyko told Whatcom News firefighters arrived to find high flames coming from bushes and threatening nearby trees. A grass fire from the bushes was also being pushed by winds. The fire was located close to apartment buildings.

Boyko said firefighters were able to knock down the fire with water and were assisted by access to a nearby fire hydrant. The scene was then turned over to Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Boyko estimated the fire covered a 300-square-foot area.

Neighbors told firefighters that there were people encamped in the area of the fire.

Ferndale Police told Whatcom News that no cause was determined and no damage beyond the brush. No charges or citations were issued.
