Work crews have been working along Thornton Street from the roundabout at Portal Way to the railroad tracks over the past several weeks. Now they are working on the west side of the tracks and seeing work being done in this more visible location got some Discover Ferndale readers thinking perhaps the long-promised Thornton Street Overpass (aka overcrossing) was finally being built.
Officials at the City of Ferndale, while still working toward the day when they can say it has started, say the work is not part of the overpass project. Rather crews are installing a new section of sewer line expected to handle additional volumes resulting from new and future development in the north Ferndale area.

Click for more informationThis sanitary sewer extension project will install a new sanitary sewer gravity main on Thornton Street beginning east of Malloy Avenue and will extend to Portal Way, via a bore under the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad tracks.
This upgrade to the sanitary sewer system will divert wastewater flows to the segment on Portal Way which then eliminates the need to upsize several other segments of existing sewer collection mains west of the railroad tracks.
Work will connect the new section to a pipe installed in 2015 when an aging 8-inch sewer main along Malloy Avenue north of Thornton Street was replaced with a new 15-inch sewer main.
