Mark Young’s quick thinking and actions this morning might have saved his neighbor’s house from being a total loss.

Young said he was leaving for work about 7:15am when he noticed smoke rising from his neighbor’s front porch in the 1900 block of Washington Street. According to Young, he called 911 and then went around the locked home pounding on the windows in an attempt to alert anyone who may be inside. Having gotten no response inside the home, he took a garden hose and turned it on the front porch.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) firefighters arrived to find Young had knocked back the fire significantly.

Two dogs were retrieved after firefighters gained access to the inside of the house. A cat was found hiding inside a short time later. It was confirmed no people were in the house at the time.

WCFD7 Division Chief Justin Iverson said if there were a merit badge to give, he would give one to Young for his efforts.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
