BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 at the Meridian Street interchange about 6:45pm on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, due to reports of a rollover crash with debris in the roadway.
According to Washington State Patrol (WSP) radio transmissions, troopers had just arrived when they reported a pedestrian walking in the southbound lanes. Soon after, troopers at the scene of the first crash reported the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
The second incident reportedly involved a vehicle that swerved to avoid a pedestrian on I-5 and rolled over.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 were closed between Meridian Street and the W Bakerview Road interchange.
Washington State Patrol described the southbound incident as a “serious injury collision.”
According to the PulsePoint EMS dispatch log reporting system, up to 3 patients were transported from the crash scene(s) to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center by medic units.
The left northbound lane was reopened shortly after. As of 8pm, the southbound lanes remained closed and traffic was being diverted off at W Bakerview Road.

Shortly after 8pm, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) issued a statement forewarning, “Prepare for delays and consider alternative routes as this could be a lengthy closure.”
About 9:15pm, WSDOT reported 1 lane was open in both directions and at 9:50pm reported all lanes in both directions had been reopened.
WSP issued a press memo that said a 24-year-old Bellingham man had been declared deceased at the scene of the incident in the southbound lanes. A southbound red 2019 Subaru Crosstrek driven by a 36-year-old Mount Vernon woman was in the left lane when it struck the pedestrian. This cause of this incident was under investigation.

Horrible! This town is way too small for the amount of people that have moved here over the past 8 -9 years. How about some elected officials start a plan to:
1) Build at least one additional hospital for Whatcom County!!
2) Build on I5, (riser freeway)
3) Address the homeless drug addiction problem that plaques this “town”.
