BELLINGHAM, Wash. — About 1pm on Wednesday, December 6th, first responders on scene of an injury crash involving a motorcyclist south of the Sunset Drive interchange began diverting traffic off of I-5.
As of 1pm, southbound traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Sunset Drive off-ramp and northbound traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Iowa Street and Lakeway Drive off-ramps.

First responders were dispatched about 12:50pm due to unconfirmed initial reports indicating the motorcyclist had been southbound when they crashed and the driver was ejected into the northbound lanes.
The driver was transported by a medic unit to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center. The Washington State Patrol said the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and it is unknown when the lanes will be reopened.
Northbound traffic began flowing through a single lane about 1:30pm. A 3.5-mile traffic jam had formed northbound by that time.
As of 2:20pm, all southbound traffic continued to be diverted off at the Sunset Drive off-ramp.
Both southbound and northbound lanes were reopened shortly after 3pm.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News that the details about the cause of the crash and if other vehicles were involved was not readily available at 3:30pm. Harding did confirm the motorcycle was southbound at the time of the crash and the driver ended up in the northbound lanes. She added that the motorcyclist was transported to Harborview Hospital in Seattle due to the extent of the injuries.
